Populus x canescens 'Tower' // Tower Grey Hybrid Poplar
Tree. Grows to 50-75' tall and 20-35' wide, fast growth rate, 3-4' per year. Slender drooping catkin flowers, up to 4" long, mid to late April before leaves emerge. Short-lived, deteriorates rapidly after 60-70 years. Fruits are 0.12" yellow-green capsules, in drooping catkin-like clusters, releasing white cottony seeds in late May-mid June. Yellow fall color. Ash-gray bark, thick, flattened or rounded ridges separated by deep fissures. Easily transplanted. Prefers moist soil but will tolerate dry. No serious diseases. Native North America, Europe, North Africa, Asia south to Himalayas. Important source of pulpwood and wood products.
