Manchuria, Cultivated 1896.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are perfect, small, light creamy yellow, 5 petals, blooming March-April on fascicles of 1-4' on previous years wood. Fruits are red, cherry-like, 0.5" long, ripening in July to September, attracts birds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Yellow-green fall color. Bark is light gray-brown on older stems, with long, slender, round, 0.25-0.5" long spines. Exfoliates in long papery strips.
Culture and Care
Easily transplanted to fertile, well-drained soil in an open, sunny location. Prune when overgrown. Zones 4-7. Resistant to pests.
