Average mature size of 7-10' tall and 5' wide. Fast growth rate. Short lived, 20 years or less.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are pinkish, attractive, fragrant, borne singly after leaves have developed in April-early May. Fruits are a blackish-purple color.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are intensely reddish-purple and stays effective throughout summer; elliptic, alternate, serrated margin, thick, leathery texture, 2" long. Leaves remain reddish purple in the fall. Bark is reddish-brown.
Culture and Care
Prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, but is soil adaptable. Transplant from bare root, BNB, or container. Easily propagated from softwood cuttings. Zones 3b-7.
