Grows to 25' tall and wide, upright, spreading to vase-shaped crown moderate to fast growth rate.
Native Range
Native to Japan.
Flower and Fruit Details
Showy, soft pink, single flowers fading to white, late April. Round black fruits, 0.5-1" diameter, attracts birds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Alternate, simple leaves, oval, rounded at base, double serrate, dark green, downy on the midrib and veins below, 2-4" long. Deciduous with yellow fall color, and almost total leaf retention into early November. Slender stems with reddish brown bark and prominent horizontal lenticels.
Culture and Care
Prefers acidic, moist, well-drained, soil, but is adaptable. Tolerates drought. Zones 5-6. Susceptible to aphids, borers, scale, spider mites, and witches broom.
Suggested Uses
Use as a specimen or patio plant, in a container planting or buffer strip.
