Average mature size of 30-50' tall and 20-40' wide, can grow to 120' tall in optimal conditions. Slow growth rate, a 100 year old tree was 45' tall.
Native Range
Eastern China 3000-4000' altitude.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are monoecious, male catkins, female solitary, occurring on separate branches of the same tree. Fruits are ovoid, erect, 2-3" long, purplish ripening to golden-brown in autumn.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are spectacular fresh green in the spring, looks like an evergreen but its not. Fall color is a brief orange-yellow. Bark is grayish to reddish-brown; lightly ridged and furrowed.
Culture and Care
Transplants well. Prefers light, moist, deep, well-drained, acid soil in full sun. Protect from wind. No serious disease or insect problems.
