Grows to 15-20' tall and wide, fast growth rate. Short lived, 20-50 years.
Native Range
Native to Europe and N. Africa to central Asia and Japan.
Flower and Fruit Details
Sessile flower catkins in very early spring, 0.50-1.25" long, grayish with yellow stamens. Fruits in 1" long strobiles, releases minute seeds with long tufted white hairs.
Leaf and Bark Features
Shoots first emerge tinged pink/rose, then leaves age to a stunning green and creamy-white variegation that lasts all summer. Pale yellow fall color. Smooth bark.
Culture and Care
Best in full sun in moist, fertile, well-drained soils. Tolerates part shade and a range of soil types - including drier soil than most other willows. When overgrown or to promote new variegated foliage, cut back in late winter. This rejuvenation will, however, remove flower buds for the following spring. Zones 5-8. Susceptible to many cankers and insects including willow gall, willow lacebug, willow flea weevil and more.
