Grows to 20-30' tall and wide, some to 50' tall with an oval-rounded crown, fast growth rate, 3-6' per year. Short lived 50 years or less.
Native Range
Species native to China and Korea.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flower catkins 1" long, not visually significant. Fruit strobiles 1" long.
Leaf and Bark Features
Bark on young stems initially yellowish and smooth, becoming brown, rough and fissured with age. Gray-brown gnarled and contorted branches brings interest to the winter landscape.
Culture and Care
Grown in medium-to-wet soils in full sun. Reported to be salt tolerant. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring, cut back heavily to encourage vigorous shoots. Easily propagated. Zones 5-8. Susceptible to cankers, and many diseases and insects.

Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' // Dragon's Claw Willow, Contorted/Corkscrew Willow
Tree. Cultivar 'Tortuosa' has leaves that are lance-shaped, curled and twisted, with yellowish-green fall color, and is named from a cutting received by Arnold Arboretum in 1923, entered commerce during the 1930s.
