Tree. Grows to 35-45' tall and wide, weeping habit. Fast growth rate, up to 3-6' per year. Short lived, mature at 25 years rarely reaches 50 years. Flowers in cylindrical catkins, 1-2" long, 0.50" wide with yellow buds. Fruits are strobiles, 1" long. Leaf: Glossy green foliage. Yellow-green fall color. Young stems are golden, and of interest in winter. Grow in medium to wet soils, in full sun. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring. Easily propagated. Zones 3-5. Susceptible to cankers, many insects, and powdery mildew. Hybrid of S. pentandra (Native to Europe) and S. alba (Native to Europe and Asia), introduced by Morden Research Station, Canada.
