Average mature size of 10-15' tall and smaller spread. Upright, heavily branched form. Medium to fast growth rate.
Native Range
Quebec to Ontario and Minnesota, south to Georgia and Missouri. Cultivated 1640.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are perfect, greenish-white, bell-shaped, and abundant, occurring April-May. Fruits are 3-lobed, inflated capsules, 1-1.5" long, pale green changing to light brown, effective in September, usually containing several hard, rounded, yellowish-brown, 0.19" diameter seeds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are opposite, compound pinnate. Bright green when emerging eventually turning dark green in summer. The foliage creates a nice effect to natural areas. Pale dull yellow fall color. Bark is light, greenish-gray with linear white fissures, smooth.
Culture and Care
Zones 3-8. No serious disease or insect problems.
Suggested Uses
Use for naturalizing an area. Best reserved for parks and other low maintenance areas.
