Average mature size of 2-4 tall and 4-8' wide, can occasionally reach 5' tall. A spreading, arching shrub.
Native Range
Kentucky Native — New Jersey to Georgia, Kansas and Texas, west to South Dakota.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are small, yellowish-white, occurring June or July, in dense and short clusters/spikes. Fruits are small, purplish-red, berry-like, drupes, 0.16-0.25" diameter, maturing in October, persisting into winter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are opposite, simple leaves, elliptic to ovate, small (0.5-1.25" long, 0.25-0.75" wide), dull dark green above, glaucescent and pubescent beneath, on a very short petiole. Bark is brown, and is often shredding/peeling on older wood.
Culture and Care
Adapts to moist to dry conditions, loamy or rocky soil, in partial sun. Zones 2-7(8).
