Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Grows to 15-40' tall and 12-15' wide. Moderate growth rate.
Native Range
Species native to west coast of North America.
Flower and Fruit Details
Monoecious flowers, not ornamentally significant, borne singly at the branch tips. Fruits are small, 0.5" long, erect cones with thin, overlapping scales, starting green maturing to brown-tan.
Leaf and Bark Features
Glossy, dark green foliage to the ground, medium texture, this cultivar stays dark green and glossy through the winter. New leaves long-pointed, scale-like, with an inconspicuous resin gland on the back. Older leaves blunt, overlapping, with no gland. Reddish-brown bark on newer stems, older bark grayish and furrowed in to relatively narrow, fibrous strips.
Culture and Care
Easily transplanted. Prefers moist, deep loamy soils, in full sun with moist air. Once established, is quite soil-adaptable. Tolerant of partial shade, but will not be as dense. Hardy to Zone 5, marginally to Zone 4. Very harsh sites can occasionally cause foliar burn, heavy snow or ice can cause some damage.
Suggested Uses
Use for screens-hedges, windbreaks, or as a specimen plant.
