Hybrid Pine (Japanese Red Pine x Scotch Pine)
Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size is 35-60' tall and 35-50' wide, with an irregular, spreading growth habit. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
Hybrid with horticultural origin. Japanese Red Pine originates from Japan, Korea and China, while the other parent, Scotch Pine, is native to Scotland, Spain, Norway, Western Asia, Siberia and the British Isles.
Flower and Fruit Details
Monoecious flowers. Fruits in cones, about 2" long, may be solitary or in clusters.
Leaf and Bark Features
Evergreen: This hybrid has 2 needles per fascicle bundle. Bark becomes reddish-orange and flaky as it ages, especially as you look up into the tree.
Culture and Care
Drought-tolerant, but likes full sun and acid soils. Will tolerate drought and clay soils. Not for shaded areas in the landscape. Avoid high pH soils if possible. Zone 3-7. Some disease and insect concerns, such as Diplodia Tip Blight fungus and pine wilt nematode.

Interesting growth habit, colorful bark develops as the plant ages. Good wildlife value. 4-season interest: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. This is a hybrid which is currently being observed for unique features contributed by both parents, which actually share a lot of similar traits.

Makes a good specimen plant due to its interesting growth habit, form and overall picturesque character.
